Opened in 2004 in South Williamsburg (prior the neighborhood’s hyper-gentrification), Marlow and Sons is already regarded as a quintessential culinary touchstone of the city. Here, owner Andrew Tarlow–who also founded Diner and Romans, two other popular Brooklyn eateries–shows us the New American-fare-in-rustic-setting blueprint that so many imitators have followed. By day, Marlow and Sons is a breakfast-sandwich-and-coffee café; at night, a still-hip raw bar and restaurant. The menu, being farm-to-market, changes daily, though fresh oysters, brick-baked chicken, and breads from She Wolf Bakery are constants (and raved about). Communal tables, bar seating, and heavy wood accents (even on the ceiling) play on the idea of a converted general store. The convivial vibe is pitch-perfect for enjoying Marlow’s one-night-only plates, like rabbit leg with parsnips and mascarpone. (What’s better, if you’re keen on any of the ingredients you’ve tasted, you may be able to buy them down the street at Marlow and Daughters, the restaurant’s mostly organic grocery store.)
