Founded in 2005 by David Strettell, the former cultural editor at Magnum Photos, the independent Dashwood Books is the city’s only bookshop devoted solely to photography. Over the past decade, the store has become the go-to gathering place for photographers, art directors, collectors, and fashion professionals seeking titles with limited distribution or runs. (Strettell is so knowledgeable and well connected, in fact, that he even builds photography-book collections for museums and academic institutions.) Here, in this sparsely outfitted space, where titles are mostly arranged by country, you’ll find anything from Taisuke Koyama’s Dots, Fungus, Crystals & Moonlight to the latest Dashwood-published titles from Jamie Hawkesworth and Ari Marcopoulos. The store’s book-signing events are stuff of legend, too. Such photographers as Roe Ethridge, Juergen Teller, and Taryn Simon have made appearances; signed copies from past events are usually available for purchase.
