What Sqirl is to Los Angeles, Cicatriz is to Mexico City. Focused on local ingredients, this small cafe is run by American siblings Scarlett and Jake Lindeman, who got their start in New York as, respectively, a food writer and a chef. Scarlett handles the menu, while Jake oversees a beverage list of Mexican natural wines, beer, and an exquisite selection of mezcal. Cicatriz serves breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon and lunch from noon to 5 p.m., at which point the menu narrows down to an exceptional fried-chicken sandwich and an assortment of pickled vegetables. Go for the Big Salad (kale, wild rice, beet-pickled eggs), the albondigas (meatballs) served with entomatados (a tomato-based tortilla with fried leeks and herbs), and a slice of banana-tahini cake.
