Originally founded in San Francisco by chef Chandra Gilbert (formerly of Café Fanny, in Berkeley) and Café Gratitude owners Matthew and Terces Engelhart, Gracias Madre is an ode to the time-honored recipes perfected by Mexican mothers—except that at Gracias Madre, everything is vegan. That means grilled tofu with coconut rice, chermoula, eggplant and red peppers; stewed cactus with Guajillo-chile sauce and cashew cream; and an ample bowl of braised lentils, peanut sauce, coconut rice, pineapple salsa and pumpkins seeds. All ingredients are organic, farm-fresh, and locally sourced, too. Committed omnivores will at least appreciate the plant-ringed patio (one of the best in West Hollywood) and the hundreds of varieties of mezcal at the bar (the dessertlike cocktails here are legendary).
